Five on Friday: Fave Looks For Under $50

Links with an * are affiliate links and I’d get a (tiny) commission if you were to purchase something 🙂

I (finally!) had some time off though and wanted to share my fave looks for under $50 for this Five on Friday. This is not so much a “where to buy” or “shop this look” post, more like  “Here’s some looks I like, maybe you’ll get some ideas for yourself.” I’ve included links and costs when possible.

I get quite a lot of compliments on this outfit. I usually pair it with a teal cardigan since it can get chilly at night (and what’s with restaurants trying to freeze us out?) here in the PacNW. I love that the tank top is snake print without being obnoxious about it.

Capris: Downeast Basics (clearance, $20)
Top: Target (clearance, $10ish).
Shoes: American Eagle from Payless ($20)

Makeup

The lipstick I’m wearing is So Susan Colour Hybrid lip/cheek mouse and was included in June’s Lip Monthly bag, which is a $10/month subscription service that focuses on lip products. I’ll have a full review on that up soon. If you’d like to check it out yourself, you can do so here*.

This lipstick goes on so so matte, and it reminds me of chalk paint. It was so weird the first time I tried it; I’ve never felt anything like it. However, there’s NO transfer at all and it has some good staying power. I’m wearing a clear gloss over it.

Fave Casual Weekend/Day Off Look

I bought the top in both black and white. They are so soft and comfortable.
Shoes: Target, girl’s size 3 ($14.99). I normally wear a women’s size 5 but a girl’s 3 is the equivalent size at Target and Payless.

Honorable Mention:

Jeans and shirt from The Buckle. See more at http://www.allthevs.com Jeans and shirt from The Buckle. See more at http://www.allthevs.com

Jeans (on sale for $49.97) and shirt ($29.95) are both Daytrip brand from Buckle. While the clothing there is not necessarily inexpensive, the fit is top notch since sizing goes by waist (e.g. 24″, 30″, etc.). My jeans from Buckle fit me better than any others. I’ve worn the jeans pictured here probably 50 times since last year and they show zero signs of wear. Well worth the money if you are going to splurge on quality denim. Their shirts have held up very well too and I find they run mostly true to size.

Casual look: white pants and blue striped shirt. See more at http://www.allthevs.com

I know the length of these white pants might bother some people, but since they are white, I appreciate that they stop short of hitting the ground. They were on clearance at Old Navy for $14 because they were a return to the store but purchased online. They are super comfy and currently on sale for $28. Shirt is a girl’s XL from Macy’s, on sale for $15 (when you wear a women’s XS and you don’t have a large chest, a girl’s XL often fits just as well and I appreciate that girl’s tops are frequently more modest than women’s tops). Sandals were from Target and I they were either $15 or $20.

Work is keeping me quite busy and wore out, plus my desktop has decided it doesn’t want to register USB ports anymore, so I’m well over a month behind on blog posts, in case you were wondering if I had just bailed on blogging. Editing photos is a hassle on my laptop (or I’m just spoiled by my large HD monitor on the desktop). I can’t get even the laptop to network reliably with my desktop to pull photos from it. Ugh! To top it off, my D3100 is acting up and not wanting to take clear photos. Technology just doesn’t seem to like me lately. I suppose it can’t get worse though, right? At least I have things to share, when I find the time and patience to share them!

Five On Friday – Retrolicious & Folter clothing review

Paul and I finally went and saw The Avengers: Age of Ultron today. I thought it was good, but I probably wouldn’t watch it again. A lot of the characters just felt “flat,” and Ultron came off as misguided vs actual bad guy. If you’ve seen it, what did you think? Anyway, on to the Five on Friday.

1.I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I bought this dress from Retrolicious. I also bought a shirt from Folter Clothing. I’m going to review the Retrolicious dress first. (I was in no way compensated for these reviews.)

The first thing I love is the colors and pattern. Very summer-y. Second: It has pockets! I love dresses with pockets. It’s also very comfortable.

Pardon the wrinkles, this was at the end of the day, after I’d sat through a movie.

What I don’t love is the belt that ties. I will probably buy a different belt to wear with it. The other thing I don’t like is that it is a little loose in the bust area. I feel like you’d really need to be a B+ or C cup to fill it out the way it was meant to be. The back tends to gap open at the top and I think, on a larger-busted woman, that wouldn’t be an issue.

2.On to the Folter shirt. This is the “Mohawk Girl” shirt. Both the dress and skirt are on clearance, so you’ll get a good deal if you buy now.

I LOVE this shirt. It fits like a dream. This is a size small. It’s very soft, and kind of punk. Not my usual style for sure. (The necklace is one I made.)

Vinny wanted in on the action.

The back is amazing. I wore a red spaghetti strap shirt underneath to avoid the awful “here’s my bra” look. I liked the contrast between the red and black anyway.

My pink spider purse is also from Folter clothing. They no longer carry that style (I’ve been lugging it around for 17 months and it’s still going strong!) but they have some other cool ones here.

I definitely expect to be buying more from Folter and Retrolicious.

3.I got a job at Home Depot, which I’m really excited to start. It’s 20 hours a week, but they said I can actually work all I want because they’re always needing someone to cover shifts. I’ll be a cashier. I use to be an office manager for a construction company, so I know I’ll be able to fit right in at the Home Depot. I’ll still have plenty of time for family and blogging too, since it’s part-time. I may work more after the summer, when the kiddo is back in school.

4.The wild raspberries are ripening up. I can’t wait to go pick them so I can make raspberry compote. Speaking of compote, did you see my Blueberry Compote Vanilla Cupcakes – Three Ways post over at Janus Lane? Super delicious!

5.I found an awesome new band called Racing on the Sun. If you like alt rock, then definitely check them out!

I’m excited to start work next week. Anything great coming up on your horizon?

Five on Friday – Five Great Finds

—->>>In case you missed it, take 56 seconds to check out Vern the Dachshund hilariously rejecting the ocean<<<—-

I shouldn’t be allowed unsupervised inside of a Goodwill, but it happens from time to time anyway, and thanks to Goodwill, I’m in a very good mood and have four things to share today! I know these aren’t things you can run out and buy yourself, but think of this as my way of encouraging you to check out thrift stores. There was a lot of name-brand stuff there. Anyway, on to this week’s Five on Friday:

1.This awesome black cardigan (is that what you call it even if it has no buttons?). I didn’t have a black one, so of course, I needed this. Yes, that is sequins you see shining on it.

2.It’s hard to tell in the photo, but it’s green and navy.

3.Grey and white striped with pockets? Yes please!

4.A chair for my crafting desk. It’s the perfect height, is in awesome shape, and was only $8! I haven’t decided if I’ll give it a makeover, as it’s going in a room no one sees anyway, but I am thrilled with it regardless.

5. I ordered this Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid a week or two ago from Amazon, and all I can say is: BUY IT. I’ve only used this like four times and holy crap, I’m already seeing results. My pores are finer, and my skin just looks fresher and clearer and even feels smoother. This is a freaking miracle product! There’s some slight tingling when I put it on (I use a cotton ball to apply it) but it goes away in like 30 seconds. I put it on, let it soak in for a few minutes, then apply my moisturizer. I wish I could remember which blogger reviewed this, but I don’t. So in case you are reading this, THANK YOU!

Honorable mention: FROGGIE! Remember my tadpoles? One of them has graduated to a full-fledged frog! He (or she) is a Pacific Treefrog and is just too adorable for words. I love watching it hop around, eating fruit flies. Pacific treefrogs come in many colors, and some even change colors. They don’t get much bigger than 2″, so they stay pretty small. I can’t wait to watch this little one grow up.

What didn’t I love this week? Wet n Wild Megalast nail polish. I took the photos half a day after painting my nails. I used a base coat, two coats of polish, and a top coat. See how my thumb looks? Every nail looked like that, some worse than that. What a letdown. Maybe someone more skilled at polishing nails would have better results, but I’ve come to realize I really do not like that style of brush. It just globs the polish on, and this polish is really thick. The color is great, I love it, but it gets a poor score for cracking like 5 hours after application. It looked twice as bad the next morning. I’m going to try thinning the polish out and see if that helps.

My best friends

Professing my love

Day 5 of the blog everyday in May challenge instructs us to “Publicly profess your love and devotion for one of your blogger friends. What makes them great? Why do you love them? If you don’t have blogger friends, talk about a real-life friend or even a family member.”

I have bloggers that I follow, but I wouldn’t say I have “blogger friends.” There’s not anyone I talk to outside of our comment sections that is a blogger, with the exception of people I already personally knew who also started blogs, but funny thing is that we don’t really do much with each other’s blogs, since they’re all in different blogging niches.

I suppose that leaves me with real-life friends and family members. Well, shoot, where do I start there? I feel like I can’t pick just one person; how can I play favorites?

There’s Leslie and her family, which has been a second family to me since 7th grade. That’s 20 years! We have one of those comfortable, seasoned friendships where we can go for weeks without speaking to each other, but neither of us feels slighted. We’re busy, and she knows how anti-social I can be.

There’s Derek, who kept me from going insane after I got divorced, and who was happy to be a guinea pig and extra hand for all my crazy projects and recipes. He was also as big of a nerd as me, and I miss watching YouTube on Sundays with him.

My best friends
I’m going to assume you are smart enough to figure out which one is Leslie and which one is Derek.

There’s my family – mom, dad, grandparents, even my well-meaning-but-best-avoided aunt, and of course, my awesome daughter.

My cousin Michael, my daughter Kayla, Leslie, Me, Paul, my mom, and my dad.

Can’t forget the furbabies either.

Vinny just going straight for looking pathetic in hopes that it will get him morsels of chicken.

Hmmm… I feel like I’m forgetting someone….. Oh! Right! The husband! He’s a pretty good guy. I think I’ll keep him. 😉
